Welcome to Golf: A Beginner's Guide with Grady

Hey there, future golf enthusiast! Iʼm Grady, your guide to the wild, wonderful, and sometimes frustrating world of golf. Whether youʼre here because youʼve always wanted to try golf, your buddies wonʼt stop pestering you to play, or you just need an excuse to spend more time outside, welcome!

What Youʼre Getting Into (And Why Itʼs Worth It)

Letʼs be real—learning golf isnʼt easy. It takes time, patience, and a little bit of self- deprecating humor (youʼll need it after your first 10 whiffs). But hereʼs the good news: golf is also one of the most rewarding, addicting, and just plain fun sports youʼll ever play. Thereʼs nothing quite like the feeling of hitting a pure shot, sinking a long putt, or realizing you finally understand what a “drawˮ means.

Who is Grady and Why Should You Listen to Me?

Great question! Iʼm not a PGA professional, Iʼm not a teaching pro, and I donʼt have a fancy coaching certification. But I have been exactly where you are. I learned the game by watching YouTube videos, spending way too much time at the driving range, and making every mistake possible (so you donʼt have to).

Thatʼs what this guide is all about—giving you a structured way to start learning golf, without feeling overwhelmed or lost. Iʼll help you figure out what to focus on, whatʼs worth practicing, and when you should stop overthinking and just swing the club. Think of me as your golf buddy whoʼs been through it all and wants to help you avoid the same dumb mistakes.

How to Use This Guide

This isnʼt a one-size-fits-all program, but it is a structured approach to learning golf over your first 30-60-90 days. Weʼll focus on the fundamentals, build your confidence, and get you ready to actually play golf—not just beat balls at the range for months on end.

A Few Things to Keep in Mind:

  • No, you donʼt need to be good to start. Everyone is bad at first. Accept it, laugh at it, and keep going.

  • Golf is full of free resources. YouTube is a goldmine of instructional content, and Iʼve curated some of the best videos to help you along the way.

  • Find what works for you. Some people learn best with step-by-step, technical instruction (directive learning). Others prefer to feel things out with visual and metaphorical cues (analogy learning). Weʼll help you figure out which style suits you best.

  • Your first goal is to play a Par 3 course. Not an 18-hole marathon, just a fun, beginner-friendly experience that gets you comfortable playing real golf.

Whatʼs Next?

Over the next few articles, weʼll cover:

  1. The Basics of Golf - Rules, etiquette, and common terms (so you donʼt embarrass yourself at the range).

  2. Your First 30 Days - Grip, stance, posture, and making solid contact.

  3. Days 31-60 - Swing mechanics, iron play, club selection, and short game basics.

  4. Days 60-90 - Drivers, playing from different lies, basic strategy, and dealing with pressure.

  5. Learning Styles in Golf - Understanding directive vs. analogy-based instruction and how it affects your progress.

  6. Deep Dives into Key Golf Topics - Backswing, downswing, putting, chipping, and more—each with a curated list of YouTube videos to guide you.

Join the Journey

This isnʼt just my guide—itʼs our journey. Golf is best when shared, so letʼs build a community where we learn together. If you find a great video, a tip that clicks, or just want to share your latest range disaster (weʼve all been there), drop a comment, share it with the group, and letʼs help each other improve.

So grab a club, get ready to make some divots, and letʼs get started. Golf might be a challenge, but trust me—itʼs one worth taking on.
